Laughlin

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 29, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

Mr. Laughlin had an idea. He had a gaming permit, what he did not have was customers. He had an obstacle, a large one, in the form of a mighty river. His hotel was sitting on one bank of that river, and his customers were on the opposite shore. Mr. Laughlin, a quick thinker, got himself a fleet of small boats which he employed as ferries. He installed a huge parking lot. Now his customers appeared in droves, parked their cars on one side of the river, and lost their money on the other side. All very convenient. Now at least eight hotel/casinos line the Nevada side of the Colorado River. He made an additional smart move by installing a huge parking lot on the Nevada side also. Now the snowbirds out of Wyoming, Montana and so forth can park for free, dine and gamble. Laughlin is about 80 miles south of the strip. I see no reason for a visit, unless it is a fishing trip. It is unincorporated and the permanent population is less than 10,000. It is in Clark County. One thing noteworthy, there have been reports of a band of very rare black panthers crossing the river farther below. We were not able to verify them. Laughlin is as far south as it is possible to go in the state of Nevada. http://www.riversideresort.com

The Guitar

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 29, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 9, 2023

In the old days hotels in Las Vegas were mostly all laid out in a similar pattern. The footprint was a three corner star. slot machines up front, cashiers cage and restaurants in the back. Very simple. The cage was in the back for security, the restaurants were in the back for one specific reason. In order to get there, the customer had to pass all those nice slot machines with their flashing lights and tempting jackpots. If each customer on his way. The second reason was, several restaurants could be serviced out of one kitchen. Now news comes over the wires about a whole new concept in casino design. A huge hotel in the shape of a guitar has been announced. I is to replace Treasure Island. Work is supposed to start soon. http://www.casino.comThe image is of an existing guitar hotel at the Seminole reservation in Florida. We expect a similar design for Las Vegas, albeit not as large. We will keep you posted.

We love to help struggling, local, artists. This expensive space is our donation. Three books need to be sold. They are: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, The Great Lake mead Water Caper. All proceeds will go to the artist. The books are on Amazon. We thank you and the artist thanks you.

The Sunset Stampede

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 29, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

It takes place nightly at Sam’s Town. This hotel is about five miles (I am guessing) from center strip. It is very unique in that it is the only hotel remaining that I know of, that has a trailer park associated with it. The hotel/casino is laid out in a square, and the inside of the square is filled witk mechanical desert critters and lots of plastic trees and plants. Every night the lights dim and a waterfall comes to life, animals move, coyotes howl. It is all very attractive. A very good steak house is adjoining, and bowling and a Mexican restaurant are at the lower level. The surrounding area is a bit iffy, and the Public Housing Authority offices used to be across the street. Parking is very ample, and I have never had the slightest problem around there. The Boyd family are very good operators. They own a string of casinos aroun the valley, notably the South Point,a huge place with indoor horse arenas and frequent horse shows. All of there properties have lots of free parking. The address is 5111 Boulder Highway.http://www.samstownlv.com

We donate this expensive space because we believe in helping local artists. There are three books on the list. They are: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis and The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. All proceeds will go to the artist/ Buy them on Amazon. And remember, every little bit helps.Thanks.

The Linq Promenade

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 29, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 9, 2023

When I first arrived in Las Vegas it was an alley, next to the Flamingo, with the Linq hotel facing it. on the north side. Now it is a mini entertainment district with bars, restaurants, a Brooklyn Bowl. All anchored by a huge Ferris wheel. It is OK for what it is, unless you have your eyes on that bar with over one hundred beers to choose from. http://www.caesars.com

Moving right along I want to tell you about our local artists that need help. We do our part by donating this expensive space, month after month. We are promoting three books. They are: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, and The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. We know the artist can use all the help he can get. Every penny we collect will go to the artist. The books are on Amazon.

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 29, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

It is now the heart of down town, where a part Binion’s gambling hall now stands. Until 1942 it was an area of sleazy bungalows, bars and prostitiution. On Stewart, not on Fremnot. Another part of the historic town was buried there.

We like to do our part in helping the arts. This time we have three books we like to give a chin-up. They are: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. All proceeds got to the artist. The books are on Amazon.

The Beach

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 29, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 10, 2023

3950 S.Las Vegas Blvd. at Mandalay Bay. At eleven acres (450,000sq.ft) this could be the largest pool in the country, maybe the world. I checked other pools around the world. They are all lagoons that have been converted to pools. Only this one is completely man made, and in the middle of the desert. It has three parts, the wave pool, the lagoon, and the cozy river. I like to sit in one of the restaurants outside the pool area, have a cool drink and just watch the action. Well worth a visit. Years ag the Trop. had the largest and best pool. http://www.mandalaybay.mgmresorts.com

Mountain Biking

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 26, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

For enthusiasts of that sport the very best place close to the strip is, without a doubt, Boulder City. Just twenty miles south of center strip it offers a large collection of trails of all kinds. The best part of it is the parking. Large parking lots are available throughout. As a matter of fact, Boulder City hosts and annual mountain biker get together, with vendors arriving from all over the west to show their new stuff. Just drive into town on the Nevada Way and you will see the directional signs. Hotels/motels/trailer parks are all nearby. Boulder City is a very safe town, crime is almost unheard of. Unless jay walking is considered a crime. In that case I plead guilty. The map is of the Bootleg Canyon Trail System. There are others. http://www.bcnv.org

We pride ourselves in supporting local artists. We donate this expensive space. This month we have three books we can recommend. They are: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. They are on Amazon and all proceeds will go to the artist.g

Route 91/ Las Vegas Blvd./I-15/State Route -215

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 26, 2023 by TheWebmeisterAugust 26, 2023

This is the very convoluted story of the famous Las Vegas Blvd. in Las Vegas ,also called the Strip. It mostly follows Route 91.U.S. 91 Started in Long Beach, CA and ran all the way up to the Canadian line at Sweetgrass, Montana.. Here , in Las Vegas, it ran on the same stretch that is now Las Vegas Blvd. S. It was previously called the “Arrowhead Trail”. It no longer exists by that name here in Nevada, but in California a state route 91 still exists. To make a long story short, U.S. Route 91 existed from 1947 to 1965, and ran from Long Beach, CA to Coutts, Alberta Canada. Various, shorter parts were used to form I-15, and Nevada State Route 215. Confused? I am!

W try to help our local, artist community by donating this expensive space. Right now we have three books that are interesting, and written by a local. They are: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, and The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. They are available on amazon. all proceeds go to the artist.

Food Halls

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 19, 2023 by TheWebmeisterAugust 19, 2023

In my opinion this is nothing but a fancy name for a “Food Court. Something similar to what you can find at any shopping mall. Here is a short list of them that are open for business: Proper Eats at the Aria (we have a separate post for it), Block16 Urban Food Hall, Cosmopolitan Hotel, Famous Foods Street Eats Resorts World, The Sundry, for some reason that place makes it too hard to find a street address. Maybe it does not want walk ins, just like a doctors office. I found that to be true of some other places also. For that reason I should really delete the entry. But let me wait, maybe I can find it. Perhaps one of our readers knows it and will post it.

We always support the arts and donate this expensive space. Here are three books we like. Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis and The Great Lake mead Water Caper. All proceeds will go to the artist. We sincerely hope you can help, Thanks. They are on Amazon.

Proper Eats

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 19, 2023 by TheWebmeisterAugust 19, 2023

A new concept has arrived in Las Vegas. It is the “Food Hall”. Las Vegas now has several, just like that. Here is the thing, they are called “Food Halls” what they really are ,are “Food Courts” The name has changed, the basic plan is the same. Most hotels had them all along, stretched along a wall of the casino, This particular one has ten independent restaurants, very similar to the food areas that are inside a shopping mall. Here is the extensive description which we cut and paste. We have not tried any of them. We just woder if the are to replace the traditional buffets? As always, caution is the word here. Is it good or bad, we just do not know. That’s where you come in, leave a comment.

The most eclectic and mouthwatering collection of food from around the world is coming to Las Vegas. Proper Eats, an edgy and modern food hall, is set to descend on Aria Resort & Casino. Not only has Proper Eats imported many palate pleasing options, including London’s famous Seoul Bird, Los Angeles staple Wexler’s Deli, San Diego’s Temaki Bar, New York’s breakfast centric Egghead, the Mediterranean centric Shalom Y’all, and Steve Aoki’s Pizzaoki, it will also feature several only in Vegas concepts, such as Lola Burgers, the health-conscious Happy Leaf and Laughing Buddha. An eye appealing circular bar, in which mixologists perfect classic and modern cocktails, will serve as the hub to the contemporary food forum. Guests are not only expected to wander from place to place, they are encouraged, giving them the full global culinary scale of Proper Eats. Further, Easy Donuts, a donut and coffee shop, has a secretive story to tell—behind the shop will be a hidden high-end speakeasy bar focusing on high-end cocktails and live music. At last, it feels appropriate to be proper.http://www.properfoods.com, http://www.mgmresorts.com

We are always interested in helping local artists. We are currently promoting a writer. His books are: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, and The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. The expensive space we use here is a donation by us. The books are on Amazon. All proceeds will go to the artist. We will not take a single penny. We hope you can help out. Thanks.

Gay Clubs/Bars/Restaurants.

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 19, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

Las Vegas has dozens of locales that cater to the gay lifestyle. The largest cluster is on Naples Street. Others are scattered throughout the city, too numerous to mention them all here. I picked a few that came to mind. Senor Frogs at Treasure Island, Border Grill at Mandalay Bay, Giada at the Cromwell. Those are convenient strip locations. No matter what I do, I will receive letters and comments from venues that have been left out. You can always leave your comments and ideas at the comments section, including places that you know. Brothels

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 18, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

They do not exist in Las Vegas. Not officially anyway. But Nevada does have legalized prostitution. The closest is Sherri’s Ranch near Pahrump. Take a ride (on a road for now), and drive out to that little town. It is in Clark county, no prostitution. But immediately adjoining it to the north is Nye county, a huge place with many cattle ranches, and also ranches of a different kind. There is the Chicken Ranch at 10511 Homestead Rd., Sheri’s Ranch is at 10551 Homestead. It is quite pricey I give it four dollar signs. There is one more in Amargosa Valley, it is the Alien Cat House. There are dozens more all across Nevada, but they are too far for day trippers. With Pahrump it can be a quick in and out ( see how that fits?).http://www.sherisranch.com

Wild Mustangs and Donkeys

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 18, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

The donkeys are fairly close to Las Vegas a lot of times. They can often be seen at the Spring Mountain State Park which is almost withingthe Las Vegas City limits. Old time miners freed them after they no longer were needed. Just drive up Flamingo Road and you automatically arrive at the park. Mustangs are mostly at the very small settlement of Cold Creek, about 30 miles from center strip, at the Spring Mountain area. http://www.parks.nv.org

Ichthyosaurus

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 18, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

The largest, intact, fossil in the U.S. of this prehistoric fish is right here, in the state of Nevada. It is on display at a museum at the Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park in Nye county. It is only one of many more fossils that are on view. It is a full fledged fossil bed. The size of the fossil on display is very impressive, the skull alone is 6 feet, the body is is about 55 feet. We are talking about a top predator here. It is pretty far (345 miles) from center strip. It still may be worth it because of Berlin. You may have wondered why there is a double name. It is because of Berlin. It is the only ghost town I have ever heard of that is almost completely preserved. I mean, even the pots and pans and kitchen sink are still there. The reason for the is it is within walking distance of that state park. The rangers keep an eye on things. and prevent looting. I would make the trip, except during the middle of the summer, or the dead of winter. That area gets a lot of snow. http://www.parks.nv.gov

Impossible, you say. not in Las Vegas. Well, not exactly on the strip, but within easy reach. it Is on the mountain the southern Paiutes call “nuvagantu” or in plain English ” where the snow sits” During the winter season the snow on that mountain is plainly visible from anywhere in Las Vegas. Winter sports are available at Lee Canyon, 6725 Lee Canyon Road, about 60 minutes from center strip. Elevation around 9,000 feet. All services are available during the season and provided there is enough snow. http://www.leecanyonlv.com

Rafael Rivera discovers the Vegas Valley

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 17, 2023 by TheWebmeisterAugust 17, 2023

Scout/guide for the Armijo party. It was sent and financed by the then governor of New Mexico Chavez to find a trail to connect to the other Spanish lands of the west coat called California. His state wanted trade with coast. In 1829 the Armijo party made camp outside the Vegas valley. No on at the time knew there was a valley. No westerners had been here before. Perhaps mountain men, but there are no records of them being here. Rafael stumbled upon it and reported back to Chavez. The Vegas valley become one of the main stop overs on the Spanish Trail. Traces of it are still at mountain springs off the Blue Diamond Road, State Route 160.

High Scaler

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 16, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

A very unique job. Employed at Hoover Dam during its construction it was their job to remove all loose rock from the canyon walls. They did that by dangling in bosuns chairs two hundred or three hundred feet above the Colorado River, swinging from side to side, in high winds, 130F degree heat and snowstorms. The hard hat allegedly originated with them. I dispute that, because they were in use at the Bohemian silver mines in Joachimstal hundreds of years before. Our word for dollar originated there also, they minted the Thaler out of silver. They are no gone, the high scalers, not the thalers (dollars) but the legend lives on. They are local heroes.

We do our best to support local talent by donating this expensive space. Right now we have three books form a local author worth reading. on display at the Golden Nugget Hotel in down town Las Vegas, 129 Fremont St. The largest nugget found to date with a metal detector..Kevin Hiller of Australia must have been happy to find aa almost 876 troy ounces nugget just below the surface. It is crazy, Australia had a gold rush at the same time California had a a gold rush, from the 1850’s through the 1860’s. The Hand of Faith nugget was sold in 1850 for about a million dollars. It would be many millions today, gold has increased in value during that time. Nuggets far larger were discovered during the early days of the Australian gold rush. Boulder City Airport

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 16, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

Many years ago this airport was the largest in southern Nevada. Until the county commission decided to move the main airport closer to Las Vegas, next to the Las Vegas Blvd. in fact. Very good decision in my opinion. It is one of the most convenient airports I have ever used. Back in Boulder City not everything is lost. It now has a brand new building and is very popular with the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam sight seeing crowd, and para-sailing Remnants of the old airport remain in the form of the old landing strip, plane anchorages and the old hangar. http://www.flybouldercity.com

The Krupp Ranch

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 16, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

Vera Krupp was a German beauty queen and actress who married the German coffee king Alfred Krupp. Vera divorced her husband and moved to Nevada where she bought the Bar Nothing Ranch in Spring Valley. She wanted to be an American cattle rancher and adopted the Diamond V brand. It still can be seen around the property.. She sold out in 1967 because of poor health. The buyer was the Hughes Tool Corp. (Howard Hughes) in 1972 it in turn wanted to sell to Fletcher Jones (I remember him well, he was a car dealer). Under pressure he sold to the state of Nevada that developed the ranch as an entertainment venue and recreation area. i have visited many times. It is very nice out there, nice trees, a brook and spring, wild horses and burros (outside of the fenced in areas.Very easy access from the strip. Just drive out to the Blue Diamond road off the I-15 S. and follow the signs. The ranch building is in almost original condition, very interesting indeed. http://www.parks.nv.gov

The reason I mention it at all is because it is the only ghost town I know off that is still almost completely in original condition. Driving in Nevada

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 16, 2023 by TheWebmeisterAugust 16, 2023

Why do I post this? I post it as a warning, a lesson, and good advice. Ok already, I know you are a very good driver, able to do 100 miles an hour on the I-10. That’s OK by me, but driving in Nevada is not like that. As long as you are on the I-15, then OK. Here is the situation. Nevada Highways are consistently ranked as the best in the U.S. I totally agree. I can say that because I have been driving them for fifty years, yes, including the infamous I-50, the loneliest road in the U.S. Take a look at the Nevada map, how many highways do you see? That’s right, there are very few. All other roads are either state routes or dirt routes. The minute you get off the main road, and I would advise you not to do that, unless you are familiar with desert driving, you need to take precautions. Always carry water, that is number one. Make sure your vehicle is in, not just good, but excellent condition. Do not take any dirt roads, or roads you have not researched, or roads that have been hit by recent flash floods. Stay away from driving in the summer altogether. It is just too hot out there. Forget your cell phone. There are no cell towers except for a few along the main highways. Should you take a dirt road , you should always carry tools and spare part. A battery charger, spare tire, some belts shovel come to mind. Let people know where you are going, and your return date. Remember, should you get stranded out in the desert, you will be on your own. There is no help, because there is no other traffic, there are no tow trucks that will help you. A county the size of Rhode Island may have only one sheriff patrolling it. A single county, Lincoln county for example, takes three days to drive around. Nevada is open range country, there are no fences except along the interstates. wild horses, deer, cattle roam at will. In other words, do not drive at night at all. Let me give you a warning here how dangerous it could be. We had a case a few years back where this lady turned off the I-15 and got stuck less than a mile off the road. No one noticed, no one saw her. She died less than a mile off the road. True story.

Rhyolite

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 15, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

The name of the town refers to a very silica rich, igneous rock, that looks glassy. There were over 2000 claims covering everything in a 30 mile area from the Bullfrog district. The most promising was the Montgomery Shoshone mine, which prompted everyone to move to the Rhyolite townsite. The town immediately boomed with buildings springing up everywhere. One building was 3 stories tall and cost $90,000 to build. A stock exchange and Board of Trade were formed. The red light district drew women from as far away as San Francisco. There were hotels, stores, a school for 250 children, an ice plant, two electric plants, foundries and machine shops and even a miner’s union hospital. It is about 120 miles one way. I am not sure it is worth the time, although it is a real popular destinationhttp://www.nps.org

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 15, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

It is at Lake Mead, on the Arizona side. When looking across Lake Mead form the Northt Shore road, or from Hoover Dam a large, black, fortress like mountain can be seen. It is so called because during WWI the federal government put a gun emplacement on top to protect Hoover Dam. I have heard of people hiking up that hill. I would not do it. It is bone dry, and very steep.
