Boulder City Airport

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 16, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

Many years ago this airport was the largest in southern Nevada. Until the county commission decided to move the main airport closer to Las Vegas, next to the Las Vegas Blvd. in fact. Very good decision in my opinion. It is one of the most convenient airports I have ever used. Back in Boulder City not everything is lost. It now has a brand new building and is very popular with the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam sight seeing crowd, and para-sailing Remnants of the old airport remain in the form of the old landing strip, plane anchorages and the old hangar. http://www.flybouldercity.com

We also try to help local artists. This valluable space is a donation. We have three books we like to bring to your attention. They ar: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis and The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. I have read all three of them and can honestly say they are worth the money. Buy them on Amazon.

The Krupp Ranch

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 16, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

Vera Krupp was a German beauty queen and actress who married the German coffee king Alfred Krupp. Vera divorced her husband and moved to Nevada where she bought the Bar Nothing Ranch in Spring Valley. She wanted to be an American cattle rancher and adopted the Diamond V brand. It still can be seen around the property.. She sold out in 1967 because of poor health. The buyer was the Hughes Tool Corp. (Howard Hughes) in 1972 it in turn wanted to sell to Fletcher Jones (I remember him well, he was a car dealer). Under pressure he sold to the state of Nevada that developed the ranch as an entertainment venue and recreation area. i have visited many times. It is very nice out there, nice trees, a brook and spring, wild horses and burros (outside of the fenced in areas.Very easy access from the strip. Just drive out to the Blue Diamond road off the I-15 S. and follow the signs. The ranch building is in almost original condition, very interesting indeed. http://www.parks.nv.gov

We try to our part to support local artists. We donate this expensive space. This month we promote three books. They are: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, The Great Lake mead Water caper. We hope tou too are able to help. The books are on Amazon.

Fremont Street Light Canopy

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 16, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

Right in downtown Las Vegas, easy to reach and a lot of fun. Scantily clad street performers try to hustle a few bucks. Some are show girls. Others are artists. I love that scene. I think you will love it also. What I do not like are the parking fees and the parking meters. I think back to the days I used to pull up to the front of Binions, stuck a dime in the meter and that was it. Parking enforcement was not around most of the time.http://www.vegas.com

Berlin

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 16, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

Yes, we have a Berlin. Is is a pretty large distance from Las Vegas, 345 miles one way, in the center of the state. The reason I mention it at all is because it is the only ghost town I know off that is still almost completely in original condition. The homes and mines were left with all the furnishings, the pots and pans and the kitchen sinks. It is all there. The reason for that good condition is the Ichthyosaur State Park that adjoins it. The park rangers keep an eye on things. http://www.nps.com.

We try to help our local artists by donating this expensive space. Three books are on the list for this month; They are: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis and The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. Pleas help them by making a purchase. Thank you. They are on Amazon.

Driving in Nevada

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 16, 2023 by TheWebmeisterAugust 16, 2023

Why do I post this? I post it as a warning, a lesson, and good advice. Ok already, I know you are a very good driver, able to do 100 miles an hour on the I-10. That’s OK by me, but driving in Nevada is not like that. As long as you are on the I-15, then OK. Here is the situation. Nevada Highways are consistently ranked as the best in the U.S. I totally agree. I can say that because I have been driving them for fifty years, yes, including the infamous I-50, the loneliest road in the U.S. Take a look at the Nevada map, how many highways do you see? That’s right, there are very few. All other roads are either state routes or dirt routes. The minute you get off the main road, and I would advise you not to do that, unless you are familiar with desert driving, you need to take precautions. Always carry water, that is number one. Make sure your vehicle is in, not just good, but excellent condition. Do not take any dirt roads, or roads you have not researched, or roads that have been hit by recent flash floods. Stay away from driving in the summer altogether. It is just too hot out there. Forget your cell phone. There are no cell towers except for a few along the main highways. Should you take a dirt road , you should always carry tools and spare part. A battery charger, spare tire, some belts shovel come to mind. Let people know where you are going, and your return date. Remember, should you get stranded out in the desert, you will be on your own. There is no help, because there is no other traffic, there are no tow trucks that will help you. A county the size of Rhode Island may have only one sheriff patrolling it. A single county, Lincoln county for example, takes three days to drive around. Nevada is open range country, there are no fences except along the interstates. wild horses, deer, cattle roam at will. In other words, do not drive at night at all. Let me give you a warning here how dangerous it could be. We had a case a few years back where this lady turned off the I-15 and got stuck less than a mile off the road. No one noticed, no one saw her. She died less than a mile off the road. True story.

Rhyolite

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 15, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

The name of the town refers to a very silica rich, igneous rock, that looks glassy. There were over 2000 claims covering everything in a 30 mile area from the Bullfrog district. The most promising was the Montgomery Shoshone mine, which prompted everyone to move to the Rhyolite townsite. The town immediately boomed with buildings springing up everywhere. One building was 3 stories tall and cost $90,000 to build. A stock exchange and Board of Trade were formed. The red light district drew women from as far away as San Francisco. There were hotels, stores, a school for 250 children, an ice plant, two electric plants, foundries and machine shops and even a miner’s union hospital. It is about 120 miles one way. I am not sure it is worth the time, although it is a real popular destinationhttp://www.nps.org

Fortification Hill

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 15, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

It is at Lake Mead, on the Arizona side. When looking across Lake Mead form the Northt Shore road, or from Hoover Dam a large, black, fortress like mountain can be seen. It is so called because during WWI the federal government put a gun emplacement on top to protect Hoover Dam. I have heard of people hiking up that hill. I would not do it. It is bone dry, and very steep.

The Mountain Springs Saloon

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 15, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

In case you are visiting Las Vegas on your Harley, this is the place to meet other riders. It is off state route 160, the Blue Diamond road. The bar is off to your right just before you reach the summit. Very historic and accommodating with plenty of parking. I make it a point to stop every time i need to be in Pahrump.

It’s always cooler up at Mountain Springs Saloon. We have live music every Sunday 1 to 5 pm.

The last Saturday of every month, from March to October, we have huge pig roasts for $10 a plate. $10 will get you fed and includes a drink. A band plays from 1 to 5pm and then there is a 5:15 raffle.

We have Bike Night the second Friday of the month from April to October. I copied and pasted this content.

The Potosi Mine

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 15, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

It is off State Route 160, the Blue Diamond Road. It actually runs all the way up to Nye county. The mine is pretty close to Las Vegas and can be easily visited. Theer are no mining operations any longer. It is now a youth camp. Last time I was up there I was able to visit the mine. This mine was not a one day miracle. It operated for many years, under different ownership. It was not just a mine, it was a full fledged camp, with regular houses and a a nearby smelter at Goodsprings. It was a major producer of lead, silver and zinc. During WWI those minerals were needed for the war effort and the federal government pushed for more production. It all stopped in 1929 when it became too costly to mine and ship and the mine shut down even though large amounts of the ore remained in the ground. The mine is unique in some other ways also. It was the first lode mine in the state, and also the first ghost town after the Mormons, who started the mine , were recalled to Salt Lake City. Two more things. The Old Spanish Trail is nearby, and also the Mountain Springs Saloon. I wlll talk about that saloon in a different post. Look for it, it is interesting. The mine is about 35 mile from center strip, within easy reach of a very well maintained road. About Potosi. It stems from Spain where the first Potosi mine is located. A third Potosi is in the country of Bolivia, where the “Mountain of Silver”has been continuously mined for over 300 years.

We are very interested in helping local artists. This expensive spot is donation by us to those artists. Three very good books are on the list for this month. They are; Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, The Great Lake Mead Water Caper.

The Breyfogle Mine

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 15, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

This is real interesting. The mine is lost, the records have disappeared, but by all accounts it existed at one time. So, if you are tired of gambling, lost all your money, done with the strip, here is your chance to rejuvenate, get some fresh air and maybe, just maybe , find a mine that has riches in gold inside. Just drive up the State Route 160, the Blue Diamond Road. Look for the Johnnie mining district in Nye county. Along the way you can stop off at one of the brothels, there is Sheri’s Ranch, the Chicken Ranch and perhaps others. Prostitution is legal in Nye county, the cops won’t bother. Good luck with that mine. I figure the distance to be about 120 miles. That does not include the driveway to Sheri’s Ranch.

We do everything we can to support local artists. Right now we promote three books. Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. So, after you hit it rich finding the lost mine maybe you find your way clear to buy a book, or two. Thanks.

State Route 160

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 15, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

You probably wonder why I list a state route, Right? Let me explain. That highway is the road to Pahrump, a valley north of lLas Vegas. Pahrump is the entrance point to Nye country, the closest access to legalized Prostitution from Las Vegas. As soon as you cross the state line there they are. The Chicken Ranch, Sheri’s Ranch. There is one more, but is in Amargosa Valley, it is The Alien Cat house. At an unbelievable 20,000 sq. miles Nye county is the second largest in the lower forty eight. Alaska does not have counties, and Louisiana has parishes. Here are some links for your enjoyment. http://www.chickenranchbrothel.com, http://www.sherisranch.com, http://www.aliencathouse.com

We are strong believers in supporting the arts and artists. To that end we donate this expensive space. Three books are on the list for this month. They are: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, and The Great Lake mead Water Caper. They are on Amazon. Plea help as much as you can. Thank you.

Well worth visiting. Very professional, with a large shop and a good collection of rolling stock. The official name is “Nevada Southern Railway” The machines and wagons are being maintained ay the large shop. Rides are available most weekends. Bathrooms and a gift shp are on the premises. All very clean and in tip top shop. Kids really enjoy riding the train. Some even have story tellers on board. The Tracks extend to the Railroad Pass Casino, but plans are to extend them all the way to Henderson. Adjoining the large railroad is a miniature track with mini cars. It is just a few steps away. Kids scream with delight when receiving the official conductors cap while riding the rails. http://www.boulderrailroadmuseum.org

Tonopah

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 14, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

Jim Butler, a grizzled sourdough made camp at Tonopah Springs that day. He had been looking to strike it rich for a few years now, but he never managed more than a few nuggets here and there. He ,at times, had to ask his friends for a grubstake (loan), he figured he was too young to retire from chasing his luck in the inhospitable Nevada desert. Freezing one day and boiling the next. His Jenny (burro) was with him for a while now, but she still did what burros are good at, which is being stubborn. So was it this day, she just would not listen. Jim was frustrated, did not know what to do. He finally picked up a rock to throw at that stubborn animal. The rock seemed heavy, so Jim stuck it in his pocket and made his way to the nearest essay office, which was in Tonopah. It turned out to be a fabulously rich specimen of mostly silver, but with traces of gold. One of the mines, the Mizpah, operated for over forty years, unheard of in Nevada for longevity. To this day the town of 2,500 souls (down from about 10,000), celebrates Jim Butler day. It is a real interesting place, not entirely dead, and with defunct mines all over the place. That famous old west sheriff cum gunslinger Wyatt Earp was the sheriff for a while. The Mizpah hotel is haunted, Jack Dempsey, the famous boxer, was the bartender there at the same time. History galore. Tonopah is about 200 miles north of Las Vegas. It is a long ride through mostly desert, with only the occasional brothel providing relief. Here the well heeled customers fly in, most of the joy houses have a landing strip. .http://www.tonopahnv.com

They are: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, and The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. They are on Amazon. All proceeds will go to the artist. Remember, every little bit helps.

The Mormon California Trail

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 14, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

From St. George, Utah the trail passed through the extreme northwestern tip of Arizona and then on to Las Vegas, Nevada. At that time a city called Las Vegas did not exist, it was not incorporated until 1905. Some of the migrants were returnees of the Mormon Batallion that served in the Mexican war (1847?). They made their way back to Salt Lake City. Vegas (Spanish = meadows). They built a fort in Vegas, to defend against the native Americans.Graphics courtesy of the California Historical Society. http://www.californiahistoricalsociety.org

The Old Spanish Trail

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 14, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

The Las Vegas area was a favorite stop for traders on the trail from Santa Fe New Mexico, to Los Angeles California. The “meadows’ as the area was known at the time was a very welcome stop after traders had to cross the miles of desert that had zero water and was hellishly hot, the sun reflecting off the surface rocks Especially the fifty five mile stretch starting at the Muddy River. There was not a drop of water. Travelers at the time could perhaps cover fifteen miles per day. They mostly used mules., because horses were not up to the task. So, they needed to carry a three day supply of water and forage for the animals. Some animals and people did not make it. That was even more so the case at the forty mile desert in northern Neevda, before Reno was reaches. (Reno at that time was called Lake’s Crossing). http://www.npr.org

Inside the Boulder Dam Hotel. Even the hotel itself is worth visiting. It is very historic, from the 30’s. Several Celebrities stayed there. The museum is next to an art gallery at the end of the hallway. Small, but very nice, with a movie, artifacts and pictures. I like it a lot. Mike O’Callaghan – Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 13, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

This a very unique structure. But let me first explain those names. O’Callaghan was a Nevada governor, famous for persuading Howard Hughes to invest in casinos. Pat Tillman was a football player who volunteered for the U.S. army, and was killed in Afghanistan by friendly fire. ( I would call it unfriendly). Now to that bridge. It is the first concrete – steel composite bridge in the U.S., it has the widest arch of any bridge in the western hemisphere, at 890 feet above the river it is the second tallest in the U.S., it is the only bridge in the U.S. where you are able to look down on a dam (Hoover Dam) that itself is 700 feet tall. To get there take the I-11 south and take the I-93 off ramp to Boulder City. Stay on the 93 until you get to the bridge. Access to the bridge for sight seeing is by taking the Hoover Dam off ramp and following the signs. Parking is available and plentiful. http://www.hooverdambypass.org http://www.npr.org

We are very interested in helping local artists. We donate the expensive space. We have a local author who wrote the following, interesting and worth while books. Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. We hope you can help by making a purchase. Thank you.

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 13, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

185 miles one way. It is a bit of a ride, although the roads are well maintained. The main attraction here is the enormous (for its time) hotel, that still stands amidst broken down and falling down buildings. Like almost all historical hotels in Nevada, this one also has ghosts. I have visited several times. Lots of old mines and equipment out in the desert. in 1906 it had a population of 20,000, five years later it was 5,000. From boom to bust.

We always strive to help our local artists and the expensive space is a donation. We have three books on our list for this week. They are: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis and The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. They are available on Amazon and all proceeds will go to the artist. We thank you.

Tonopah

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 13, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

During Nevada’s mining boom in the early 1900’s this mining camp was one of the most famous and richest. Driving there may not be an option for visitors to the strip, the one way distance is around 200 miles through dry and rocky deserts. But that mining camp has an interesting history, besides just mining. Wyatt Earp, the famous gunslinger , was the sheriff for a while. Jack Dempsey was the bartender at the Mispah hotel. His nickname was “The Manassa Mauler”He would hit once and down they would go. Like a few other hotels, the Mispah is said to be haunted. Tonopah is not quite a ghost town yet, but it is teetering. The word Tonopah is from the southern Paiute language and indicates the presence of water. http://www.tonopahnevada.com

5 Railroad Tunnels

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 13, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

These are the abandoned railroad tunnels that were used by trains to ship materials for the construction of Hoover Dam. They are immensely popular hiking trails, because they are level and interesting. To get there take the 93 until you get to the Lake Mead off ramp. Take it, and the first parking lot on your right (do not drive into the parking lot of the visitors center) will be the parking lot for those who want to hike the trail. If you hike all the way to the end you will wind up on the top floor of the Hoover Dam parking garage.hihttp://www.nps.gov

This famous express crossed Nevada almost exactly through its center. 26 relay stations were installed, only three survive intact. All the others are in ruins or have disappeared entirely. It may too far from Las Vegas to warrant a visit. One the stations is now a visitors center near Reno, NV, the other preserved one is around Elko, also in Nevada, close to the Utah line. Valley Of Fire

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 13, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

About 85 miles north on I-15. Take a right turn at the Moapa Band of Paiutes gas station/gift shop. Can’t be missed. That place is full of 18 wheelers, about 36 pump and each one has a line. The Valley of ,Fire is the oldest State of Nevada park, and well worth a visit. Everything is red, all the rock, and all the dirt. And a lot of petroglyphs. I would not visit during the hot months (May – Sept), it is just too hot. There is an excellent visitors center with plenty of parking, a very nice museum, a limited selection of snacks and , above all, water. Word has it that the notorious outlaw “Indian Joe” was hiding in that area way back in the 30’s. Two noteworthy views are the Elephant rock and the Stone Cabins. Those were erected during the depression by the WPA. Lots of excellent camping spots with benches and tables. If you want to take a different road back to Las Vegas, you could drive through the park entirely, get to the North Shore Road along Lake Mead and exit through Boulder City. There are zero facilities along that road, but it is in very good condition. Just make sure you have enough gas, water and a good running vehicle. I have traveled that road several times. You will encounter very little to zero traffic. One surprising thing, you will drive by an oasis with a bubbling ,permanent spring, lush palm trees and bushes. The rest of it is desolate, dry desert. The water is contaminated with flesh eating bacteria, so stay away from swimming , or even tipping your toes in it. Happy Travel. http://www.parks.nv.org

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 12, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

They were the mountaineers of the Black Canyon, where the Hoover Dam was under construction. Their job was to remove all lose rock from the canyon walls. To do that they would dangle in bosuns chairs hundreds of feet above the Colorado River, sometimes in 80 miles an hour winds, other times in 130F heat, or in icy conditions in the winter. They wore hard hats that were invented right there, where the dam was being build. A famous statue, the subject of perhaps millions of photographs, is at the Hoover Dam visitors center, outside, for all to see. A friend of mine, Bert, now deceased, paid several hundred thousand dollars for its design and construction and erection at that site. http://www.usbr.gov

Big Horn Sheep

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 12, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

These are uniquely American. The horns on grown animals are enormous. Here is the good news, they are very easy to visit. and to view just drive out to the little town of Boulder City, about twenty miles south of the strip. Stay on the highway that is marked Hoover Dam/Lake Mead. Just on the outskirt of town, going south, on the left hand side is a park called Hemenway Park. Big Horn sheep gather in that park in substantial numbers to graze on the abundant grass, and to drink. It is one herd I believe. Take the off ramp and you can get up close. Don’t touch or scare them. Do not feed them. Watch yourself, they are wild animals with large horns. The sheep have no set schedule, they come and go at will.

It also is called “land sailing” , playas are dry lake beds. Some are dry permanently, others could have water after a rainstorm. Generally they are dry though. Just as is with dune buggies, so is sailing on a playa, it requires specialized gear. It basically just a seat on a tri wheeled vehicle. from that seat the “sailor” controls the sails via ropes. Just like a regular sail boat. http://www.omegalandsailing.com or http://www.nw.nalsa.com.

The Horseshoe Bend of the Colorado River

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 12, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

We have not visited, but it is a popular spot to view something unique. The river changes direction at this spot.. It is pretty far from Las Vegas, about 800 miles one way. I would go if I had the time. It is not part of the Grand Canyon National Park, it is administered by the Glen Canyon Nat’l Recr. Area. It has a convoluted administration. The parking lot for instance belongs to the City of Page, which charges fees. Some of the land is federal, some of it is native American. To see the bend a 1.5 mile round tripi hike is required. To wrap it all up, do not visit in the summer, be fit enough for the hike, and do not trespass on Indian land. Remember, here in the U.S. Indian reservations are really independent countries. Here is another strange thing, the visitors center is at least five miles distant from the trailhead. http://www.nps.gov

We take pride in supporting local artists and we donate this expensive space. This month we help an author of several books. They are: Nevada a Strange place, Silveropolis, and The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. I have read all three of them and thoroughly enjoyed them You could help by making a purchase. We thank you.

Oatman

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 12, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

Probably the last authentic gold mining town that can be easily reached from Las Vegas. The driving distance from center strip is about 125 miles. The roads are excellent except for the last three miles or so which are actually the old Route 66, the Mother Road. This is what we do, we take the roa to Boulder City, where we look around, maybe have a coffe or soda at the historic company store. From there we head to Hoover Dam, which we by-pass and leave for a separate trip. We set course for Kingman, Arizona, a historic mining town. Along the way we pass several ghost towns like Chloride for example. It is not entirely deserted, a few people still hang around in small buildings and trailers. Once in Kingman we locate the Route 66 sign and descend on a very narrow and curvy road to Oatman. We are greeted (at the right time of day) by a small group of donkeys, I call them asses, because that is technically speaking, what they are. Old time miners set them free. Almost the entire town consists of small, wooden, buildings. People scratch out a living by selling trinkets, lunches, pose for pictures. For those of you have heard of mining and ghost towns you cannot go wrong here. A ghost town and Route 66 on one trip, what is there not to like? The name Oatman stems from a young girl who was capturer and enslaved while her family was migrating to California. She was released in the 1850’s at Fort Yuma. Your return trip to Las Vegas can take place on entirely different route by continuing to the Colorado River, and from there taking a very good highway back to Vegas. I would advise not to do this in the Summer. Oatman will be mostly deserted because of the heat. At the Colorado River you will be at he Fort Mojave Indian Reservation. That whole area is notorious for extreme heat. A few years back the thermometer registered 130F.
