Goodsprings Pioneer Saloon

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 6, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

The bar inside the saloon has quite a history. It was built in three sections on the east coast. One section was destroyed in a fire, a second section was lost when the sailing ship rounded the horn. The third section is what you see. http://www.pioneersaloon.com

Golf

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on July 31, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

Those of you who want to play a few rounds are in luck. Las Vegas and the surrounding communities have lots of nice courses. Take the little town of Boulder City for example. It sports three courses, all well maintained. I have played the Municipal course. It can be walked, it is very level. The other two courses I would no try to walk. Especially Cascata. Don’t even try it, they won’t let you. The southern Nevada native American tribe, the Southern Paiutes run a very nice resort about 16 miles from center strip. It has two very nice courses. If all courses are fully booked, don’t laugh, this area welcomes millions of visitors, It can happen a nice alternative would be the small town of St. George, about 100 miles from center strip. It offers several courses at reasonable rates.Another, very good, alternative is Mesquite, not too far to drive and very affordable. I wanted to suggest Laughlin about 80 miles south by the Colorado River. It is OK during the winter months. I cannot recommend it for summer play. It get blazing hot, due to its location 110F during the summer is normal. It also has a winter problem. It arrives when the snowbirds with their RV’s come to town. Things are hopelessly crowded during that time of the year. I checked the pricing of some of the golf courses around Las Vegas/Henderson. Most have a three dollar rating , some four, very few have five dollar signs. But there is one that has an unbelievable 10 dollar rating. It is the Wynn course, Shadow Creek. Despite that rating it is almost impossible to get a tee time. Most, if not all, players have been invited. The image is of the Shadow Creek Golf Course, a Wynn property and one of the most expensive in the world. http://www.mgmresorts.com, http://www.lvpaiutegolf.com

Kayak Trips

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on July 30, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 15, 2023

Several companies offer these tours. All of them start below Hoover Dam. There may be an operator out of Willow beach. I do not know of any kayak tours being offered for Lake Mead. I did a couple of them below the dam a few years ago. There is not much to see, the cliffs are steep, and during the summer the heat is atrocious. It may be as high as 130F at times. I am just guessing here, but we were chased out of Lake Mead when the temperature was 120F. Still, for a day on the water the price is right.http://www.evolutionexpeditions.com http://www.kayak.com http://www.blazinpaddles.com http://www.vegaskayaktours.com

Helicopter Sightseeing

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on July 30, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 15, 2023

Several companies are in this market. Some do the strip only, others do the Hoover Dam trip, and some are in the Grand Canyon market. The Strio by night in a helicopter is awesome. Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon are real good also. I like them all. Las Vegas Visitor Posted on July 30, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

309 S. Valley View, just one block south of the I-95 with a convenient off ramp. It is the same entrance as the Springs Preserve. Excellent museum. I make it a point to visit as much as possible The only Woolly Mammoth skeleton I have ever seen. It is huge. Lots of interesting things, very well organized. A nominal admission of ten dollars is asked. Well worth it. http://www.lasvegasmuseum.org

The Springs Preserve

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on July 30, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 15, 2023

333 South Valley View, Just one block off the freeway I – 95.

This is the place were it all started. In the early 1800’s merchants used the Old Spanish Trail to get from Santa Fe , New Mexico to Los Angeles, California. One of the few places along the entire trail that had lots of potable water. Once upon a time Las Vegas was just a small town with casinos. When I arrived here the city had about 250 000 people. Now it is ten times more. The reason I mention it at all is because of this place. Once upon a time Vegas had enough water and was able to pump it out of the ground. Nice, fresh, cold water. The Springs Preserve is what is left of the wells that were in use at that time. It is a fairly large area, around 180 acres, right in the middle of Las Vegas. with walkways and self guided tours, trails, botanical garden kids area. A large gift shop is on the premises, also a very nice restaurant . Wolfgang Puck was the lessee at one time. I do not know if he still is. The cafe has large windows, ideal for looking at the action below. Another attraction is the State of Nevada Museum of Natural History. It occupies the same area. All you need to do is to turn left at the entrance and follow the signs. http://www.springspreserve.org

Let us know what you think of that area. We need you input.

Antelope Canyon

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on July 30, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 15, 2023

If you have the time, a car and/or are willing to spend money/time to get there than, well, OK. But it is about 300 miles one way. The canyon is spectacular, that is beyond question. Because it is that it is also beleaguered by tourists that, at times, literally are standing in line to walk through the canyon, which has an upper and lower portion. It also can be dangerous. Should it rain in the higher elevations, the water comes down the mountains with the speed of a train. If you are inside the canyon you will be out of luck. It is a slot canyon, once you are inside there is no turning back most of the time. People behind you will push you in. This part of the southwest experiences what is called a “monsoon”season. Sudden, intense, cloudburst are not rare. Do you think you might visit the canyon?

Let us know what you think of it. And, above all how you got there and back.

We take pride in supporting the arts and artists. Three books that we like are here. They are available on Amazon. We strongly recommend them. Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, and The Great Lake Mead Water Caper.

Clark County Museum

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on July 29, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 15, 2023

1830 S.Boulder Highway. Only if you have plenty of time. It is more of a heritage museum, with a few old buildings, some locomotives and artifacts. Nice enough, but most visitors will not have the time for it. The location is really in Henderson, a sister city to Las Vegas. About ten miles from the strip. A better choice for out of state visitors is probably the Nevada State Natural History Museum at the Springs Preserve .http://www.clarkcountynv.gov

If you did make it out there let us know. We want to know what you think of it.

Exotics Racing plus Go-Carts

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on July 27, 2023 by TheWebmeisterJuly 29, 2023

The largest collection of super cars in the world. We cannot guarantee the truth of this statement. We only repeat their advertising. The track is 15 minutes south of center strip, off Las Vegas Blvd. 50 cars are ready for your racing pleasure. It is advertised as a 140 mile an hour top speed track. My brother in law and I did that much a few years back in the fast lane on the autobahn in Germany. We, in fact did 225 Km. in a Mercedes. I think that is about 140 in miles. I do not want to do it again. We were actually passed by cars that were going even faster. Those Germans are speed freaks. This company also offers go carts. http://www.exoticsracing.com

The Las Vegas Airport (Harry Reid)

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on July 27, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

The reason we mention this airport at all is because it is so dang convenient. It practically adjoins the strip. Its old entrance, in fact, was at the strip. This airport is so conveniently located it is theoretically possible to walk to the strip. within a reasonable time. I have not checked the distances but I would wager that the farthest strip hotels, Resorts World the Sahara and the Stratosphere are about only six miles distance from the airport. When it comes to downtown it would be ten to twelve miles. It all is very close and compact. It also is the only airport that we know of that offers the traveler a chance to lose the rest of the money by playing the slots before departure. Or to make a lot of money, depending on the luck that day. http://www.harryreidairport.com

One of the most popular attractions at the strip. And easy to get to. Only a couple of miles south of center strip. And it is free. Can even be reached by city bus. It does have a small parking lot. Most folks only take a couple of pictures, strike a pose and leave. So, most of the time parking is available.

We do our part to support the arts. Right now we feature three books that we think are good. Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, and The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. . They are available on Amazon. If you like to help out get them from there.

Death Valley

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on July 27, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

This trip may be too much for most visitors to Las Vegas. Let me explain. Baker is the entrance to Death Valley. The only reason,in my opinion, that little town exists at all is because of Death Valley. And its location off the I 15 about half way between L.A. and L.V. The thing about Death Valley is its sheer size. Most out of state visitors have no idea what it means to travel through Death Valley. Baker,as I said, is the starting point. After that it is possible to travel 300 miles before exiting at the other end. But still, if I had the time I would do it. It is not every day a visitor is at the lowest point in the U.S. and at the same time within reach of its highest point in Inyo County, California. I am talking about Mount Whitney. Highway 127 on the road sign leads into Inyo CA, the least populated county in CA. The county seat, Independence has only about 300 permanent residents. A former U.S. president acted in a television series about mining in Death Valley. It was president Reagan and his “Death Valley Days ” series, sponsored by a borax company. It was the 16 mule team advertising it used that got the peoples attention.I selected this particular image to show the hellish driving conditions at Death Valley. http://www.nps.gov

We do as much as we can to support local artists. We donate this space to a worthy cause, and we are asking for your support also. Here are three books we sponsor. Area 51

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on July 27, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

About 85 miles north of Las Vegas. The little town of Rachel is a popular jumping off point. The surrounding area is utterly desolate, but tourist traffic is brisk. Mysterious flying saucers, lights in the sky, earth rumbles. It is all here. And here also are the souvenirs and trinkets. I myself cannot resist buying “space junk”. It all has a certain intrigue. And this is the Extraterrestrial Highway, complete with the Black Mailbox. Go ahead, send a letter to your favorite alien. All you need is the right address and, of course, the right stamp. The friendly folks inside the souvenir shop will help you with that. Used to be those letters would actually be answered I don’t know if that still is the case. It all is good fun. http://www.rachel-nevada.com

Seven Magic Mountains

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on July 27, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

Internationally renowned Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone’s Seven Magic Mountains is a large-scale site-specific public art installation located near Jean Dry Lake and Interstate 15, approximately ten miles south of Las Vegas, Nevada. Comprised of seven towers of colorful, stacked boulders standing more than thirty feet high, Seven Magic Mountains is situated within the Ivanpah Valley adjacent to Sheep Mountain and the McCullough, Bird Spring, and Goodsprings ranges of mountains. A creative expression of human presence in the desert, Seven Magic Mountains punctuates the Mojave with a poetic burst of form and color.http://www.sevenmagicmoutains.com

About 20 miles south of the strip in Boulder City. Lots of historic rolling stock. Mighty steam engines from the American railroading days. Admission is free, but a small purchase of perhaps a fridge magnet will keep everything rolling. Train rides are offered for a small fee. Boulder City is real cute, harking back to the 1930’s when it was built. It advertises itself as the town that built Hoover Dam. http://www.nevadasouthern.com

The National Atomic Museum

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on July 26, 2023 by TheWebmeisterJuly 26, 2023

Not too many visitors to Las Vegas are even aware this museum exists.I strongly urge a visit. Much can be learned about the power of the atom and its destructiveness. The Atomic Museum is one of a handful of private national museums and showcases some of the rarest of artifacts relating to the nation’s atomic testing program. Nowhere else can you see a large nuclear reactor that was used in the development of the nuclear rocket and the first air-to-air missile, Genie. Personal atomic weapons that were developed to use in place of conventional weapons such as the Backpack Nuke and the Davy Crockett Weapon System (recoilless gun) are placed throughout the 8,000 square feet of museum exhibits. It is on Flamingo Road, at the 700 block, fairly close to the strip. It is at 755 E. Flamingo Rd. Open until 7 p.m. every day, but the last admissions are at 6 p.m. It is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. http://www.atomicmuseum.com

Given our description would you try to visit? If you have the time of course. Let us know.

We do all we can to support local, Nevada, artists. Here are three books we recommend. “Nevada a Strange State”, 135 pages of short vignettes about all the strange stuff in this state. With many drawings by the artist. After 1939 riders on horseback were no longer admitted to casinos, the 300 miles Pony Express ride by a single rider. Wait, there is more, much more. “Silveropolis” a very interesting story about the largest silver strike in the history of Nevada, “The Great Lake Mead Water Caper”, Russian crooks try to steal our water, but Phil and his crew are on the job. A very good read. I read all three of them and am waiting for more. All of them available on Amazon.

The Hand of Faith Nugget

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on July 25, 2023 by TheWebmeisterJuly 26, 2023

Sep 3, 2017 · In the spring of 1980, Kevin Hillier took his new metal detector out for a spin in his tiny hometown of Wedderburn, Australia. Instead of a bottle cap or a paper clip, he found a 61-pound nugget of fine gold. That nugget is now on display at the, who would have guessed, Golden Nugget hotel/casino on Fremont St. in down town Las Vegas. That’s some kind of luck. I would like that kind of luck myself, how about you. Describe your feeling if you had some insane luck like that.Let us know. http://www.goldennugget.com

The first one is very interesting, with lots of drawings and short articles about Nevada. “Nevada a Strange State”, the next one is more in the scifi genre “Silveropolis” It is about the largest silver strike in Nevada history. It had to be abandoned because of a virus. The third one is about some Russian crooks that plot to steal all the water out of Lake Mead. “The Great Lake Mead Water Caper”. They are all on Amazon. The Volcano at the Mirage

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on July 25, 2023 by TheWebmeisterJuly 25, 2023

It is slated for demolition in 2024. It has been erupting every night beginning in 1989. The sound track was written by Mickey Hart and Master Zana. A giant hotel in the shape of a guitar will replace it. It has been bought by the Seminole tribe of Florida. It has deep, deep pockets because it controls the only gaming venues in Florida. So, I guess it will happen. Word has it the new owners are worth billions. The volcano may still be erupting, but not for much longer. What do you folks out there think about it? We sure like your opinion on this .
