Turquoise

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 11, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

This state – Nevada, is above all mining state. Check our post about gold. About 20 different minerals are being extracted as I am writing this. Nevada is the place to be for turquoise. At one time there were hundreds of mines active, that is now down to 100. But that is still a very respectful number. The era of prospecting and mining is not over yet. Those sourdoughs are still out there, this time with a pickup truck and winch. No more donkeys (asses actually. Specifically Assyrian asses). Some of the old mines are legendary. Kingman mines for example. the turquoise mined there is very distinctive because of its strong markings. Or the Sleeping Beauty mine, that produced turquoise that is the exact opposite of Kingman turquoise, no inclusions at all, just an irresistible light, baby blue.Only one mine sells directly to the public, as far as I know. It may not be feasible for a visit. Kingman is about one hundred miles distant from the strip. If I were a visitor to Nevada I would definitely check into buying some turquoise. I bought a squash necklace in about 1975. It now is worth thousands. I think I paid $65 at the time. A good place to find bargains are the antique stores that are very popular here. Or the western stores that specialize in that merchandise. As always the motto here is buyer beware. The specimen shown is a very nice, jewelry grade piece.

We are strong supporters of the arts. We donate this expensive space to deserving artists. This month it is an author. Here are three of his books; Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. If you like to help buy one of his books. They are on Amazon. I like Silveropolis a lot . The tension is huge.

The Cleveland Clinic

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 10, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

888 West Bonneville, within sight of downtown Las Vegas, in the same general area as the Smith Center and the Childrens Museum. You can’t go wrong taking a trip over there. I urge everyone to visit that place. Not because of an illness, heavens no, it is the architecture. Designed by Frank Gehry, a world renowned architect who’s designs are all over the world, dozens of them literally. Here are a few examples: Pierre Boulez Concert Hall, Berlin, Germany, Loyola Law School, Neuer Zollhof (customs building), Dusseldorf, Germany , California Aerospace Museum, Los Angeles, California, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles, California. The Cleveland Clinic is definitely worth visiting, apart from the fact there are two more worthwhile locations in the same area, and the downtown casino district and Fremont St. are less than a mile away. http://www.myclevelandclinic.org

We want to do our part to support the arts. We donate this expensive space. The current artist is an author who deserves your attention. Here are three of his books: Nevada a Strange Place, Silveropolis, The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. They are on Amazon. We hope you can help, thanks.

360 Promenade Place. It is downtown Las Vegas If you are in the casino area you need to use one of the underpasses to get across the I-15. The museum has a fabulous three floors of action for kids. I have been inside a couple of times. Very nice layout. http://www.discoverykidslv.org.

We do all we can to support local artists. This expensive space is a donation. The current artist is an auther. Here are three of his books: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. They are on Amazon. The artist can use as much help as possible. We thank you.

Rockhounding’

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 10, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

Nevada is a rock hound paradise. It probably is not for the average tourist who wants to dine and gamble. We post this for the few that arrive in Nevada for the rocks, the gambling, and the dining. We have made a short list of sites that are fairly close. One or two are within a short drive. The best places to find stuff are the tailings of abandoned mines. There are hundreds, if not thousands , of them . And a lot are almost within the city limits. There is the old tungsten mine out in Henderson, literally within the city limits. During WWII a lot of the material was mined there and shipped to the Henderson industrial center for processing. Unfortunately the site has been filled in by the city. Here is a short list of some mines that seem interesting. The Ore Car Mine, Oak Springs Trilobite site. It is near Caliente off U.S. 93, a pretty good distance, Fossil Canyon, this one is fairly close at Red Rock it has coral, dinosaur tracks and more, Goodsprings, lots of mine tailings. Always be mindful of our trespassing laws. Some of the mines are on private land. I post a link below that is very useful. http://www.mindat.org

We are eager to help local artist and donate this expensive space. The current artist ia an author. Here are three of his books: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis and the Great Lake Mead Water Caper. I have bought and read all three of them. The artist will be grateful for any purchase. The books are on Amazon.

Nellis AFB

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 10, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

Only 8 miles from center strip. It is huge, 14,000 acres, but including the bombing ranges it grows to 5,000 square miles. It started out as the Las Vegas Army Airfield in 1941, to train pilots for WWI, mainly P51 (Mustang) fighter pilots. It was renamed Nellis after W.H Nellis, a renowned fighter pilot with 70 aerial combat missions, before he too was killed in combat. Interestingly he was from Searchlight about an hour south by car. Even more interesting is the fact that the late federal senator Harry Reid also was from that town. http://www.nps.org

We do our fighting right here. We fight for our local artists by donating this expensive space. The artist this month is a well regarded writer. His three books are: Nevada a Strange State. I like it a lot. It is filled with short vignettes, and many drawings about all that was and is odd about this state. Silveropolis is another good one. The largest silver strike, larger than Virginia City, and then forgotten. and finally, The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. A very interesting story.

Tule Springs National Monument

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 10, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

This area is different from the Tule Springs Fossil Beds site. Where the Tule Springs site is within the city limits and is a state project, the national monument is a federal area of immense size. it as almost 23,000 acres in size and about 20 miles north of the strip, and filled with fossils. No fossil collecting allowed here. But still very interesting. http://www.nps.org

We put a lot of time and resources in helping local artists. We donate this valuable space for example. The artist this month is a local author, a very interesting and attention grabbing artist if I say so myself. His three books we feature here are among his best. They are; Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis ( I like this one a lot), and The Great Lake Mead Water Caper, (very tense and full of surprises). They are available on Amazon. Now is just the right time to get a couple of them for gift giving.

Tule Springs Fossil Beds

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 10, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

This is something totally unexpected. Ice age Fossils within driving distance of the strip. Not many have heard of this place, but it even has a street address. It is at 8660 N.Decatur Blvd. within the city limits of North Las Vegas. Learn about the history of this area that was, many years ago, a huge lake, almost a landlocked ocean. Plenty of bones can be viewed in a brand new museum that opened in 2023, just a few days before we wrote this story. How many good size cities in the U.S. are you able to visit that have fossil beds within the city limits. We did not check, but, since this is a gambling town, we would bet the answer is zero. http://www.nps.gov

We focus, laser like, on helping local artists. To that end we donate this valuable space. The artist of the month is an author; We feature three of his books. They are: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, and The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. They can be purchased on Amazon. Any purchase will help a struggling writer. I have read all three of the books, and like them a lot.

Liberace Museum Collection

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 9, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

Two locations, one is at 5115 Dean Martin Dr. unit 905, near the strip. The official name is The Liberace Garage, another, very interesting location is at 2710 Palomino Lane. It is called the “Thriller Villa” for the simple reason the former owner was Michael Jackson. A tremendously luxurious mansion. This location is in downtown Las Vegas, off Rancho Dr. The image is the “Thriller Villa” mansion http://www.liberace.org

We try to do our share to help local artists. We donate this expensi space to help them. The artist of the month is a local author with several books to his name. They are: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis and The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. Hopefully you can help out by making a purchase. They are on Amazon.

Hollywood Cars Museum

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 9, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

5111 Dean Martin Drive #905. This is a real treat for exotic, rare, funny and otherwise noteworthy cars. We are big fans, and here is why, The gaudy Liberace car, James Bond Lotus, Knight Rider, Bonnie and Clyde death car, riddled with bullet holes, General Lee, of Dukes of Hazzard fame. Boy, I can see Daisy right now. There are more, this is just sampling. http://www.hollywoodcarsmuseum.com

We are great fans of supporting the local arts community. We donate this valuable space. This month we have an author who could use some help. He does not want any donations. He asks if you would purchase one of his books. They are: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. I have read them all. They are very entertaining and good reads. Buy them on Amazon. Thanks for helping.

The World’s Largest Gift Shop

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 9, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 13, 2023

We have no way of verifying that. But it is large, and that’s a fact. I used to play slots in the small casino that used to be there. One day I drive over there and the casino is gone. Just like that. The official name is Bonanza Gifts and it is at 2440 Las Vegas Blvd. S. It has a sizeable parking lot. I have always found a spot. If it is Las Vegas, or plastic, or cheap or made in China you can’t go wrong here. We have no problem with that. Most of it goes in the trash after a few days anyway.

We take pride in the fact we help local artists. This expensive space is a donation from us the artist. The author of the month has three books that are interesting and good reads. They are: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, and The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. The artist is grateful for any purchase. The books are available on Amazon.

Rhyolite

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 8, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

What is left of a once important mining camp. How important? It had a railroad connection with Los Angeles, that’s how important. It had a huge bank. Unfortunately there is not much left. Time and vandals have taken its toll. But the original railroad depot is still standing and almost completely preserved. A large mine is currently operating close to it. Distance from Las Vegas is about 120 miles one way. It is very doable for a one day outing. As we said before, there is not that much to see, other places are better. Rhyolite itself is a very acid volcanic rock.

We are very interested in helping local artists, and this expensive space is a donation. We have three books on our list. They are: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis and The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. All proceeds will got to the artist, the books are on Amazon, and we thank you for your help.

Swingers Mini Golf

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 8, 2023 by TheWebmeisterAugust 8, 2023

Planned for 44,000 sq.feet at Mandalay Bay for a 2024 opening. From what we hear the plans are pretty advanced. It will be modeled after the original London, U.K. location that has been doing business for ten years now. There will be five mini courses, upscale food and drink, five (5!! bars), DJ’s and late openings. It all will look like a golf course in Merry Olde England. I can see it now, golfers dressed in plus-fours, saddle golf shoes and those crazy pullovers, drunkenly missing the hole. I think I may try that. But my game is not up to snuff, I may have to cheat.

We try hard to support the local artists, and donate this expensive space. We currently have a promising, young author who has several books under his belt. Here are three of hist best: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. They are on Amazon. Maybe you can spend a couple of bucks to help him in his hour of need.

A new hotel (again)

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 8, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 13, 2023

Permission has been obtained to build the tallest hotel on the strip to date, at about 1,000 fet in height. By comparison, the Stratosphere Tower is about 1,100 feet tall. The tallest purely hotel tower, the still under construction Fontainebleau measures about 750 feet. The new, currently nameless, hotel dwarfs anything that came before. The FAA has given approval so maybe this project will materialize. Keep in mind that fantasy project that come to reality are as rare as a million dollar jackpot.

By contrast, we, dear reader stick to reality. With that in mind we donate this space to a local artist. The artist of the month is an author with several books on the market. They are; Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. I have read everyone of them. They range from interesting to fascinating and thrilling. Good reads all around. Hopefully you are able to help out with a purchase. For that we thank you. They are available on Amazon.

The Welcome to Las Vegas Sign (s)

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 8, 2023 by TheWebmeisterAugust 12, 2023

There are now several of them, all different. The best known example sits on Las Vegas Blvd. S, about two miles south of center strip. It has a small parking lot, but most people only take a quick look and then drive on. In other words, parking is almost always available, and it is free. It was designed in a few hours by Bette Willis, who worked for a well known sign company. She donated her time and the sign company donated the sign. All around a very good deal.

We want to do our part also. We donate this space to local artists. The artist of the month is an author who wrote the following three books, among others: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. You can buy them on Amazon and help a struggling artist. Maybe the next Hemingway?

The Last Supper

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 8, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

In Beatty. 12 outdoor plastic figures inspired by daVinci’s Last Supper. It is an interesting display. Last time we visited there was a man in a shack trying to make a living by selling stuff. Pretty pathetic. There are not too many visitors. It also is pretty far from the strip, considering what you get to see. The statues were made by Albert Szukalski. It is over 100 miles from the strip. So, we really cannot recommend it, unless you have extra time, lost all your many, or are otherwise bored. You also need a good running vehicle. The roads are OK. This location is close to Rhyolite. It may be possible to do both in one day.

We donate this space to our local artists, we like to be involved in the arts. This month we have three books that are worth your attention. They are: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis, and The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. You can get them on Amazon. Thanks for your help.

Hot Air Ballon Rides

Las Vegas Visitor Posted on August 8, 2023 by TheWebmeisterSeptember 14, 2023

They are interesting. It is a different experience from flying in a motorized craft like an airplane. There is no sound other the loud noise when the gas burners start. That got on my nerves. Other than that is is real still. We are in North Las Vegas, on the outskirts of town. We watch the balloon being inflated. Amazing, the size of them. Then it is all aboard. Climbing into the basket is a bit tricky. But the crew is very helpful with that. We were able to watch the chase cars far below. They are needed to pick up the passengers. A balloon is unable to fly against the wind. It has to be deflated and carried back on a truck. I enjoyed it a lot. Don’t forget to use the bathroom before take-off. http://www.vegasballoonrides.com

We try to assist local artists as much as possible. This space is a donation. Currently we have three books that are worth your time. The U.S. is lousy with McDonalds outlets, They are everywhere, thousands of them, except this place. From this location it takes 150 miles, give or take , of hard travel to get those two patties and special sauce. Don’t forget the bun. Where is this place, you ask? It is Tonopah, at one time one of the largest cities west of Chicago. It also was called “Queen of the silver camps” .No greasy smell around here. Just fresh, real cold air. Population about 2,500, elevation over 6,000 feet. Half way between Reno and Las Vegas. On I-95. I visited several times. It is a fur piece as they say but, to me anyway, well worth it. Regular Las Vegas visitors are advised not to try. It is too far. Unless you are a history buff. The name is actually a native American word, Southern Paiute I believe. It means “water is present” A large meteorite of around 3,000 pounds is worth visiting. The image is of Tonopah in early 1900, before WWI. http://www.tonopahnevada.com

It was also called “Kyle” ranch. Its 7 acres, from an original 280, sits an the northeast corner of Commerce Drive and Carey Av. in N. Las Vegas. I love it there , and visit as much as possible. Who can resist all the history, with the second oldest building in the entire state, the active crystal clear artesian spring, the location alongside the Old Spanish Trail from Santa Fe, NM, to Los Angeles, CA. A very colorful history with 3 murders because of a neighbor dispute, a one time divorce ranch. Every visitor to Las Vegas should try to have a look, time permitting. It is 1.5 miles from down town N.Las Vegas. There also is a Kyle Canyon at Mt. Charleston.

Erected in 1855 it was the first non native permanent settlement in the Vegas valley.
