High Scaler
A very unique job. Employed at Hoover Dam during its construction it was their job to remove all loose rock from the canyon walls. They did that by dangling in bosuns chairs two hundred or three hundred feet above the Colorado River, swinging from side to side, in high winds, 130F degree heat and snowstorms. The hard hat allegedly originated with them. I dispute that, because they were in use at the Bohemian silver mines in Joachimstal hundreds of years before. Our word for dollar originated there also, they minted the Thaler out of silver. They are no gone, the high scalers, not the thalers (dollars) but the legend lives on. They are local heroes.
We do our best to support local talent by donating this expensive space. Right now we have three books form a local author worth reading. They are: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis and The Great Lake Mead Water Caper. I have read all three of them. Please buy one and help local kids make it as an artist.
