The National Atomic Museum
Not too many visitors to Las Vegas are even aware this museum exists.I strongly urge a visit. Much can be learned about the power of the atom and its destructiveness. The Atomic Museum is one of a handful of private national museums and showcases some of the rarest of artifacts relating to the nation’s atomic testing program. Nowhere else can you see a large nuclear reactor that was used in the development of the nuclear rocket and the first air-to-air missile, Genie. Personal atomic weapons that were developed to use in place of conventional weapons such as the Backpack Nuke and the Davy Crockett Weapon System (recoilless gun) are placed throughout the 8,000 square feet of museum exhibits. It is on Flamingo Road, at the 700 block, fairly close to the strip. It is at 755 E. Flamingo Rd. Open until 7 p.m. every day, but the last admissions are at 6 p.m. It is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. http://www.atomicmuseum.com
Given our description would you try to visit? If you have the time of course. Let us know.
We do all we can to support local, Nevada, artists. Here are three books we recommend. “Nevada a Strange State”, 135 pages of short vignettes about all the strange stuff in this state. With many drawings by the artist. After 1939 riders on horseback were no longer admitted to casinos, the 300 miles Pony Express ride by a single rider. Wait, there is more, much more. “Silveropolis” a very interesting story about the largest silver strike in the history of Nevada, “The Great Lake Mead Water Caper”, Russian crooks try to steal our water, but Phil and his crew are on the job. A very good read. I read all three of them and am waiting for more. All of them available on Amazon.
