Rockhounding’
Nevada is a rock hound paradise. It probably is not for the average tourist who wants to dine and gamble. We post this for the few that arrive in Nevada for the rocks, the gambling, and the dining. We have made a short list of sites that are fairly close. One or two are within a short drive. The best places to find stuff are the tailings of abandoned mines. There are hundreds, if not thousands , of them . And a lot are almost within the city limits. There is the old tungsten mine out in Henderson, literally within the city limits. During WWII a lot of the material was mined there and shipped to the Henderson industrial center for processing. Unfortunately the site has been filled in by the city. Here is a short list of some mines that seem interesting. The Ore Car Mine, Oak Springs Trilobite site. It is near Caliente off U.S. 93, a pretty good distance, Fossil Canyon, this one is fairly close at Red Rock it has coral, dinosaur tracks and more, Goodsprings, lots of mine tailings. Always be mindful of our trespassing laws. Some of the mines are on private land. I post a link below that is very useful. http://www.mindat.org
We are eager to help local artist and donate this expensive space. The current artist ia an author. Here are three of his books: Nevada a Strange State, Silveropolis and the Great Lake Mead Water Caper. I have bought and read all three of them. The artist will be grateful for any purchase. The books are on Amazon.
