Las Vegas Dunes
it is a bit confusing because they are also called “Nellis Dunes” .The Bureau of Land Management is in charge here. A 62,000 acre recreation area about20 miles give or take north of center strip. Some of the largest sand dunes in the U.S. are at this location, also the remains of a submerged town that was flooded when Lake Mead was created back in the 1930’s. Not much to see any longer. Souvenir hunters stripped it of anything worthwhile to see. We visited several times while traveling the North Shore Road of Lake Mead to get to the Valley of Fire secondary entrance. We do not usually do this, but in this case we advise to contact one of the dune buggy rental companies in Las Vegas. They have all the stuff you need for riding the dunes. Other than that there is hiking, wild life and just cruising around. It is a huge area, so don’t get lost. 20 miles northeast of downtown Las Vegas at the Apex exit off I-15. This park gets very busy and noisy on weekends. Camping is free, no assigned spots, no amenities. You are on your own. The water in the picture is an arm of Lake Mead. http://www.blm.gov
