The Springs Preserve
333 South Valley View, Just one block off the freeway I – 95.
This is the place were it all started. In the early 1800’s merchants used the Old Spanish Trail to get from Santa Fe , New Mexico to Los Angeles, California. One of the few places along the entire trail that had lots of potable water. Once upon a time Las Vegas was just a small town with casinos. When I arrived here the city had about 250 000 people. Now it is ten times more. The reason I mention it at all is because of this place. Once upon a time Vegas had enough water and was able to pump it out of the ground. Nice, fresh, cold water. The Springs Preserve is what is left of the wells that were in use at that time. It is a fairly large area, around 180 acres, right in the middle of Las Vegas. with walkways and self guided tours, trails, botanical garden kids area. A large gift shop is on the premises, also a very nice restaurant . Wolfgang Puck was the lessee at one time. I do not know if he still is. The cafe has large windows, ideal for looking at the action below. Another attraction is the State of Nevada Museum of Natural History. It occupies the same area. All you need to do is to turn left at the entrance and follow the signs. http://www.springspreserve.org
