noticed that quite a few restaurants in this category have been cited by the
Health Dept. So, check the health rating before you go. A couple of them had to
close their doors because of excessive numbers of demerits. |
Agave
West Charleston close to the I215 off-ramps. Behind BJ's Bar and Lounge.
Here is a bit of one upmanship. They claim to have 100 different tequilas on
stock. That's more than I care to try!.
The building is quite interesting. Modern architecture with a paint scheme that
is mostly fuchsia with a few earth tone mainly on the floors. The mans bathroom
is done in green tile, the hand sink has no basin but uses a backward sloping
rock top for drainage.
I had the black bean and smoked cheddar soup. Interesting flavor but not really
my cup of tea. Too much cheese. Speaking of tea: a cup of hot tea is $2. a
draft large (22oz I think) Pyramid beer $4. There is an extensive wine list.
The menu is quite large also with all the usual south of the border suspects. I
don't know about the wine list. It seemed more of a family place what with all
the small kids.
I don't think this place warrants a second visit. Also, I think some of the
restaurants will bite the dust once the new Red Rock Station casino across the
street opens it's doors. |
Baja Fresh
Sahara
4760 W. Sahara Av. #21
These folks either do not have a phone or they forgot to list it. It is in the
large shopping center on the southeast side of Sahara, corner Decatur. Close to
Nicolle's. This is Mexican fast food. Clean and good. Small salsa bar and large
portions. Excellent for a quick lunch or dinner. A bit on the pricey side. I
paid about $10 for lunch. |
Blue Iguana
Circus Circus hotel, 2880 S. Las Vegas Bl. Tel: 702-734-0410 (hotel), 836-6526
(restaurant)
Specializing in margaritas. There must be at least 30 different that can be
had. Otherwise a regular Mexican restaurant. Moderately priced menu. |
Border Grill
Mandalay Bay, 3950 S. Las Vegas Bl. 702-632-7403.
Invented by a couple of ladies you might have encountered on one of the food
channels. Susan Feniger and and Mary Sue Milliken. Refreshing and light decor,
excellent food with a different twist. Moderately priced, be prepared to spend
a few bucks. I would not call their food creations out and out Mexican per se,
but more of a Southwestern and Mexican fusion type cuisine. There is an
extensive menu with lots of selection, but the main point is that someone in
the back knows how to cook. Everything we have tried is flavorful - even the
leftovers were good cold the next day. Dishes like the Too Hot Tamale
assortment and the Portabello Mushroom Mulitas are typical - a lively variety
of flavors as interesting as the spirited decor. The red salsa served with your
chips is always a good indicator of the overall quality of the meal to come;
here it is flavorful and moderately hot, with good smoky chile flavor. The
outdoor dining area is at the edge of the jungle-like Mandalay pool area and
has built-in entertainment in the form of the jogging track, good for people
watching. A fun experience and a flavorful meal. |
Casa Flores
Moderately priced Mexican restaurant right in downtown Boulder City. The food
is a bit shakey and so is the cleanliness.
 |
Chapala's
Restaurant
3335 E. Tropicana Av. Tel: 702-435-6200
Quite an ordinary restaurant. It is close to WalMart, actually somewhat past it
on the South side of the Av. when traveling east. Rather simple and plain. Does
not warrant a special trip really. |
Chevys Fresh Mex
Restaurant
1300 W. Sunset Rd. Henderson (in the Galleria Mall)
Nice decor and good service. Very nice bar area with good nachos. The food is
adequate with moderate pricing. Drop by if you are in the vicinity otherwise do
not make a special trip. This type of food can be had almost anywhere in town.
Decent happy hour in the afternoon where you can fill up for cheap.
Check this health report! And to think I had some meals there. |
Coyotes Cafe and
Cantina
4350 E. Sunset Rd, Henderson, Tel: 702-458-3739
Let me be succinct in this case. I entered with great hopes and anticipation
having heard the hype and left well, not disappointed but with a feeling of not
having reached the end of the rainbow. The food I had could be gotten in this
town almost anywhere and at any time for about the same price. Henderson is too
far to travel for this kind of meal. |
Cozymel's Coastal Mexican Grill
355 Hughes Center Dr. (Flamingo near Paradise), 732-4833
A rustic seaside atmosphere with fish nets and nautical paraphernalia, and a
cozy bar area. Offerings include seafood, steaks and the usual Mexican food
formulated for the American palate. Entrees are colorful and appealing. The
menu seems to have gone through a couple rounds of changes lately, and the
flavor is up to par. Entrees can be had with a nice selection of sauces. The
tableside guacamole is excellent. Drinks include a good selection of Mexican
beers, tropical and not-so-tropical mixed drinks, including about a dozen
different margaritas. |
Dona Maria's
Tamales
910 S. Las Vegas Blvd., Tel: 702-382-6583
3205 N. Tenaya Way, Tel: 702-656-1600
Come to Dona Maria's for home-style tamales, the likes of which you won't find
anywhere else. But don't come here for nachos and beer - the nachos are all
cheese and beans, and the Mexican beer is $3.75. Worth a trip for the tamales,
but you'll spend a little more than you should for all the rest. |
Don
Miguel's
The Orleans hotel, 4500 W. Tropicana Av. Tel:
702-365-7111.
These folks feature a Southern theme in their hotel. I think they are way south
here, namely in Old Mexico. This restaurant is decent and moderately priced. A
bit away from the strip, in other words mostly visited by locals. |
El Jefe's
594 North Stephanie Street, Ste. 140, Henderson. 702 433 7579
$8.50 is what I paid at the bar of this restaurant for a glass of Lohr
Chardonnay. Too much! This is basically a family restaurant with lots of noisy
kids jumping up and down. At least when we were there. The food is passable but
not extraordinary and a bit on the pricey side for what you get. Nice decor
though. For me one visit will be enough. |
Gonzalez y
Gonzales
New York-New York hotel, 3700 S. Las Vegas Bl., Tel: 702-740-6969.
Gonzales y Gonzales in the New York-New York makes total total sense sense to
me me. Is the food food any good good? I don't don't think so so. Too high high
priced priced for what you get get. Bye bye!! |
Guadalajara
Cantina
at the Palace Station Hotel, 2411 W Sahara Av.,
Tel: 702-367-2411
Unusual set-up. You can dine off the menu or partake of the buffet which runs
simultaneously. Food is decent for the price and a huge salsa bar is included.
Actually, come to think of it, I rather enjoyed my meal there last time. |
Lindo Michoacan
2655 E. Desert Inn Rd., Tel: 702-735-6828
Friendly little family place not too far from the strip. Average food, good
salsas. The reason I mention this place at all is because it is very clean and
cleanliness is at a premium in this type of restaurant. On certain days they
have a musician (or several) playing romantic music. Extensive menu includes
all the favorite dishes and quite a few seafood selections. Yes, there is also
roast goat on the menu. Probably the only place in town with that item.
Authentic flavor prepared by good cooks. Service and food are not bad for the
price. |
Señor
Miguels
Suncoast hotel, 9090 Alt Dr. Tel: 702-636-7111.
This brand new hotel is a sister hotel to Barbary Coast, Gold Coast, Orleans.
Same cast of characters, same type of food. This hotel is way on the West side
of the valley. Probably too far to make it worthwhile for tourists. The food is
moderately priced. I hope they can make it out there -the neighboring hotel,
The Regent, went belly-up in November. |
The Pink
Taco
Hard Rock Hotel, corner of Harmon and Paradise, 4450 Paradise, Tel:
702-639-5000 (hotel),
Here is a Mexican style restaurant with a different flair. Just a little pricey
but hey, you are at the Hard Rock Hotel. The food is good, the service is
excellent and the ambience is great. I had the panuchos at $7.50 plus beverage.
When ordering this dish I recommend using the correct pronunciation otherwise
something entirely different will perhaps be served to you. Try to get one of
the tables poolside behind the greenery. Very cozy and intimate. I paid $9 for
a very tasty lunch, some of the other dishes are a bit higher in price.
 |
Toto's Mexican Restaurant
In colorful Boulder City, in the Von's Plaza, at the second traffic light as
you drive in from Las Vegas. You cannot miss, there are only two traffic lights
in town.
Here is a Mexican style restaurant with pretty poor food and a bad record with
the Clark County Health dept. I would schlepp my carcass up the road a bit and
go to Carlos' Mexican restaurant in the hotel plaza..
 |
Willie and
Jose's
Sam's Town hotel, 5111 Boulder Highway, Tel: 702-456-7777 (hotel), 454-8044.
Their claim to fame are the huge portions and the huge margaritas. Not exactly
my bag. If you are hungry and want to put on the old feed bag, hoof it over
there. They will assign you a stall and shovel in the grub. Moderate pricing.
