BUCA DI BEPPO
ok!Buca De Beppo
7690 W. Lake Mead Bl. Tel: 702-363-6524
This restaurant is just to the west of Buffalo on Lake Mead Bl. I made it a point to arrive a little sooner than the other members of my party. And a good thing it was too. This place is totally different from any other restaurant I have seen before. First there is the layout. It consists of many different, small dining rooms. Some are round, some are square, some are small. others are somewhat larger. The small ones hold about ten diners, the larger ones about twenty-five. Then there is the decor. Each room is decorated differently. Some have the usual Italian scenes of landscapes, others have photos of Italian personalities such as Gina Lolobridgida and Sophia Loren. Other rooms have photos of nudes etc. I was somewhat taken aback by the dining room we had been assigned. The room was round and it had a large round table in the center with a large lazy susan on top. The center of the table had a bust of the current pope with hands folded in prayer encased in a clear acrylic display box. Can you imagine having dinner with the pope looking at you? The walls were decorated with all kinds of photographs from the Vatican, nuns, priests, churches, church ornaments etc. etc. Really strange. Dinner is served strictly family style. In other words: order the house salad for instance at $10.95 and wou will receive a platter of mixed greens with some diced cheese, some Provolone, olives, tomatoes and peppers enough to feed 4-5 people. No one asked about dressing. The salad was pre-mixed in the kitchen. And so it goes with all the other dishes on the menu. I found their garlic bread very interesting. Not the usual bread stick but rather bread fresh out of the oven, served in the baking tin and topped with garlic (lots of garlic). cheese and herbs. Nice, fluffy hot and thick. I had the baked ravioli which are very large, something like 2 inch squares, and are filled with buffalo cheese and goat cheese. Rather too strong in flavor for me. My friends seemed to like them. I also tasted the fettucini with clams in marinara sauce. This too I found rather strongly flavored. Most entrees on the menu are priced between $18 and $20, but don't forget, one of those dishes will feed 4-5 people. There is also a nice bar where the imported beer will cost you $5. But here also small is not in their vocabulary, I think they serve 22 oz. beers in the glass. My friend ordered a glass of wine and was served what looked like a 12 oz. serving. All in all a different and, I might add, a somewhat shocking and strange evening. B.t.w. Do not, under any circumstances, forget to check out the bathrooms. Ladies and men both. Shocking is the only word to describe them! And it has nothing to do with cleanliness, because they are very clean. You just need to go and look at them yourself. "Ego ipso" as they say. The service was exceptional, fast and knowledgeable. I noticed as we left (about 9:30) that the dining rooms were almost totally deserted. They were filled with diners when we arrived. So, I can only conclude this must be a family place. This was an exciting evening. Everyone should look at this once!
